TCP/IP - Media disconnected

I am trying to set up my ethernet network card with a
cable modem. When I run winipcfg, it says my IP media is
not connected. I have tried un-installing and re-
installing hardware, network adaptors, etc. All
connections are working, it also seems like my computer
is "searching" for the modem, finds it, but still no
internet connection. Any ideas? Thanks for your thoughts.

The "Media Disconnected" error means that there is no connection detected
between the network card and the network device. This could be a faulty
cable, an incorrect cable (using straight-through instead of crossover or
vice versa) or it could be a problem with the configuration of the cable
modem.

since there seems to be a connection (at least for some
seconds) between my ethernet card and cable modem
(indicated by lights blinking simultaneously on both
devies), would that point to modem configuration? how
could i change that?
i have a neteasy/d-link DRP-16TX PC card.
your help is greatly appreciated.

thanks for your tips richard and carey...

i tried another cable, which is was using as of yesterday
on my home network (2 computers, no hub). other cable
produced no connection/communication between NIC and
modem. once plugged other cable in (given to me by ISP)
lights blinked again, and system started to "hang" as
before. either time, media still disconnected.
what else to do? run the steps from carey's website, or
try another network card?
tried to call ISP helpdesk, they told me my network card
is probably broken - hard to believe since it worked
yesterday.

i have no idea what the cables are - both say type CM on
the them. looking at the ends from the same angle, one
cable appears to have the colored wires in the same order -
the other cable does not.
if both are same, should i try the other type of cable?

i found out one cable is straight thru (link lights up as
stated before every few seconds), one is crossover
(doesn't work). i read a straight cable should be used
with my modem.
still no luck - perhaps a new straight thru cable?

i tried a brand new straight cable, still hanging, no
internet, BUT now i have an IP address when i run
winipcfg. checked network card again with other computer
(as set up before for network with crossover cable) and
worked/did not hang. also installed updated network card
driver. no change. perhaps faulty modem?
