Default Direct Cable Connection

Whenever I set up my laptop (host) to my desktop (guest)
via DCC to transfer files, it constantly asks me for the
name of the "host" computer. I am connecting viz parallel
cables. Even though I enter it (umpteen times) corretly,
it still does not recognise the laptop. Oddly enough,
however, if I enter the desktop's "guest" name it shows up
immediately on my desktop machine in windows explorer
(which is kind of stupid). Does anyone have any tricks or
tips to get this Direct Cable Connection to work? BTW, is
there any advantage in using a serial cable as opposed to
a parallel one.

Any and all help greatly appreciated.
