unresolved symbol installing sarge

hi,
trying to load ethernet card (marvell yukon) module during sarge
installation (compiled with same version of kernel and compiler) I get
many "unresolved symbol" errors.
after installing in other way and copying the kernel from the
installation cd, I can succesfully load the same driver.
any ideas why?
