Slow Logins and Shortcuts

Periodically, me and several other users experience slow logins. Our
computers sit at the 'loading personal setting' prompt after we enter our
passwords. Maybe 10 minutes later we are able to see our desktops.

After logging in, I click on a shortcut to an Excel document and Excel
starts but the document takes much longer to appear. If I browse for the
document and open it that way, it opens instantly. None of us have roaming
profiles either.

Is this a computer browser issue? Are these PCs having problems finding the
server? If it were a switch issue, I would think it would affect everybody.

Any ideas?

Sounds like name resolution issue. I would check the DNS settigns first. Or post the result of ipconfig /all.

As said, this is name resolution issue. It is better to setup an internal DNS instead of using the ISP DNS. Also, since this is NT 4, you should install WINS server.
