Default Slow folder browsing over VPN

Hi All,

I am running Windows Server 2003 on one of our file servers. Our firewall
manufacture is forty net. The firewall uses RADIUS to authentication user
accounts to active directory. Using MS built in VPN client in XP Pro we can
access the file server through the VPN. When accessing a mapped network
drive (F we CAN pull up all files and folders with out issues. However,
one of the folders within the F: drive contains about 46GB of user data and
when we click on that folder it will take about 1 min. or so before it brings
up the content and when clicking on any of the other folder within the
F:\userdata\ folder it also takes a long time before we can see the content.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Steve D.

1. Performance is horrible with mapped drive letters,...stop using them, and
use UNC paths instead. You can create Shortcuts tot he UNC location to make
things simpler. The Shortcut can even go in the User's My Documents to make
it look like a normal folder under the My documents.

2. Windows Explorer will always be slow over VPN. Explorer was designed to
work either locally or over an ethernet connection of 10mbps or faster.

VPN is a "slow WAN" technology,..and for whatever you use it for, you must
always keep that in mind before commiting yourself to whatever method you
are using.
