I would recommend to first test if the tunnel is slow, of if it is only a
service.

For example, you could test if an FTP from you worsktation to your internal
server is ok or not. If ok, in a frame point of view, you can say that the
tunnel is ok and then you investigate.

When you open a file, there are different mechanisms (RPC, CIFS,
authentication, ... ) that may cause a problem, that why I advise you to
test with a basic flow of data with FTP.

Regards.

VPN is always painfully slow. It always runs at the slower "upload speed"
when using asyncronous connection (like most DSL and Cable), and then on top
of that only a percentage of the possible bandwidth gets used, which is true
of any kind of connection anywhere. Even on your own 100mbps LAN you don't
really run at 100mbps,...if you did every "session" would saturate the line
and no other machine could use the LAN until the first one stopped.

The right way to handle this is to have a machine at the target location
that you can remote control from the machine that you are sitting at
(PCAnywhere, GoToMyPC, Terminal Services, Citrix, and Windows Remote Desktop
are examples).
