I have a really strange VPN problem. I'm not sure whether this is server- or
client-side problem, I decided to post this here first. I have a Windows XP Pro workstation at home and I used it to VPN into 2 different SBS 2003 networks. It worked just fine for a couple of weeks. Now I can still connect to both networks (one at a time, of course) but I can't browse server resources on the other network. When I first connect, then do Start -> Run -> \\server it says "element not found" (the error message was in Finnish, so this propably isn't the exact translation). I can ping SBS server by name (ping server.domain.local) or IP address. Remote desktop also works just fine. I can use IE to go to our offices printer web adminstration so I guess the VPN is sort of working. But I just can't use servers shared resources. It worked before, now it suddenly doesn't. NET VIEW shows only my computer. NET VIEW /DOMAIN:<domain> says error 6118. When I try to access a shared folder, I get "element not found" (or whatever it is in English) but nothing shows up in the client computers event log. Instead the SBS server security log has six of these errors in a row (they appear again each time I try to access a resource, not when I make VPN connection): Event Type: Failure Audit Event Source: Security Event Category: Logon/Logoff Event ID: 537 Date: 31.1.2006 Time: 2:46:29 User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Computer: SERVER Description: Logon Failure: Reason: An error occurred during logon User Name: (E-Mail Removed)l Domain: Logon Type: 3 Logon Process: NtLmSsp Authentication Package: NTLM Workstation Name: WORKSTATION Status code: 0xC0000225 Substatus code: 0x0 Caller User Name: - Caller Domain: - Caller Logon ID: - Caller Process ID: - Transited Services: - Source Network Address: 192.168.0.22 Source Port: 0 However, when I VPN to the other SBS network everything works just fine. I have tried to delete the VPN connection from network connections and create it again. I also tried using the connection manager from the remote web workplace. I was thinking that maybe this is related to my account somehow, and tried on a different computer. It worked instantly. The client has nothing special about it, and there is no spyware/viruses or any firewall software present. At the same time there are about 10 users which use VPN to connect to this network every day without any problems. So, in a nutshell: one specific Windows XP Pro client can't browse resources on one specific SBS 2003 server. Use different client _or_ server and it works. Any clues? Sami Torvinen Sami Torvinen |
