Hi Carey,

thank you very much for your very helpful "netfixes.htm". I have been
studying it and trying things out since yesterday.
But it all didn't help.
The symptoms my computer is having are almost exactly as they are
described at
http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q272/9/91.ASP
(the address you offer in TIP#1), but I can't fix it.
The registry entry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD\Vnetbios
is in my registry (with the proper values).
When I download the Microsoft fix 272991usam.exe I have a language
problem because of course I have a German operating system here.
The uslanguage file vnetbios.vxd which the fix offers has the same date
and version number as the germanlanguage file vnetbios.vxd which runs on
my computer.
I even substituded the german version by the us version, but nothing
happened.

My computer keeps telling me there is no network or no started network,
there is no network resource in My Network Places.
But when I try to find computers, I do find my own and the other
computer I am connected with (via a router). But then again I cannot
access the icons which the search result offers.

Can you think of something?

Regards,
Henriette, Germany

Yes, please contact Microsoft. If they determine you need this patch (german
version) they will provide it to you. There is no charge for that.

I will do that. Somehow other users in Germany must have this problem as
well.

I have 2 more questions:

In your nice script you have a list of the needed network components
which does not include netbeui. Netbeui is not needed?

As our computers are connected via a router, can you tell me how I must
configure the TCP/IP Properties? The winipcfg program shows me a whole
lot of addresses.

The script is for FIXING problems. You must load Netbeui if you want to
diagnose efficiently.
The script is not a How-to Set Up A Network, it's how to FIX a network.

If everything is working great, then obviously you wouldn't be reading the
script or loading Netbeui.

If something is not working, follow the script word for word and it will
point to the problem. No one in the last two years has been able to present
a problem that was covered by the script.

Sorry. I just don't understand. I have not understood your reply. The
problem is I do not even know whether I have a network or not. Maybe I
have one and do not see it and it needs to be fixed (by the patch which
I will aks Microsoft Germany for). Or maybe I do not have a network at
all. That's why I asked about Netbeui and the TCP/IP Properties that
must maybe be set.
The only thing I know is that both computers are connected via a router,
and internet works fine on both machines.
Do you maybe know a place or script which describes how to set the
TCP/IP properties and maybe a place which tells me whether I need to
install Netbeui. And maybe a place where I can read about how to detect
a network?

Sorry for all these questions, but I have nobody around whom I can ask.

Actually, Netbeui is not in my script. I recommend using IPX/SPX for
diagnostic.

You should only need TCP/IP for a standard network.

Any time 2 or more computers are set up to communicate with each other, that
is considered a network.
So if you have one compuer, you do not have a computer.

If you have 17 computers, but they are not connected together through a
hub/switch or router, then you do NOT have a network.

If you have 2 (or more) computers connected through a hub/switch/router then
you have a network.

Maybe this would go a lot faster if, rather then telling me what the
problems are, instead tell me what you are trying to accomplish. You have me
lost.

Default Re: Network with other computer

sure that I have everything "properly installed" before I turn to
Microsoft Germany to ask them for the patch for Windows ME with German
language.
Thanks for your help.
