Default XP and Windows 98 - Network Gaming Help

HELP!!!

My son wanted to connect his playstation 2 to his computer in his bedroom
which is Windows 98 (2nd edition). The internet works fine via a Speedtouch
121g adaptor and my main computer (Windows XP), downstairs (which has a
Speedtouch 585 router).

Playstation have been little help when I phoned, on the playstation forum I
was advised that I need to create a network bridge on my son's computer
(Windows 98) but I don't know how to do this. I have looked and looked but
can't find HOW to do this.

Can anyone help with this bridging matter or give me any better advice.

From buying him the Playstation2 network adaptor (for his Birthday back in
March!!!), I have bought the router + wireless usb adaptor, a crossover
cable, ethernet card (as his computer didn't have a ethernet port), and we
still haven't managed to get the internet working on the playstation, though
it is fine on his computer.

Please, Please, Help!!!

There is no bridging on win98, you need windows xp for that.

However, if I understand your setup correctly, all is not lost. You
can probably achieve the connection by routing but it's a bit more
complicated to set up.

If the router with the 2 pc's is on network (say) 192.168.0.0/24 you
need to put the win98 ethernet card and the playstation on a different
network (say) 192.168.1.0/24 and enable routing between the two
interfaces on the win98 machine by editing the registry as follows :-

System Key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD\MSTCP]
Value Name: EnableRouting = 1
Data Type: (string value)
Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

Then make the default gateway on the playstation the win98 machine
(ethernet card) and the default gateway on the win98 machine the
router.

Then add a static route to the router to send traffic for the
192.168.1.0/24 network via (the ip address of) the win98 machine usb
adaptor.

I'll guess that the win98 machine currently gets its (usb) ip address
from the router. You will have to give it a static ip address outside
of the router's dhcp pool range.

If it all sounds too much, post some more details of your network ip
addressing scheme and I'll try to be a bit more specific.

Jim.

That should be
Value Name: EnableRouting
Value Data: 1
