In trying to configure everything in Network Neighborhood properties for a 98SE notebook computer, I am not able to add clients or services. When I select Client or Service in the Select Network Component Type dialogue and click on the Add button, nothing happens. I'm under the impression that I must add Client for Microsoft Networks and Printers and file sharing for the network to work properly. Thanks in advance for any help. I've googled till my synapses fail to fire. Irvo |

Steve,
Thanks for the quick and relevant reply. All of these files were in the inf directory, Nettrans.inf, Netcli.inf, Netservr.inf. I replaced them anyway, and it didn't change anything. Here is perhaps another clue as to what's messed up: When I try to add another protocol, the Select Network Protocol window only lists IEEE 802.TX protocol. To get TCP/IP, I have to click on Have Disk, then type in \windows\inf. Yes, two. An SMC8040TX wired and a Belkin Wireless G Notebook. I can access
the internet with them. > > > do you have a network card installed ? > |

OK, I got rid of all references in the network configuration window. Checked
Device manager and registry after that and didn't find any references in those places. When I went to reinstall, the Select Network Protocol window comes up that shows the IEEE 8021X Protocol and asks me to choose the appropriate one for this device. I click OK and then see an Insert Disk dialogue asking for 'AEGIS Client Setup'. I don't have one of those, so it can't find files such as libeay32.dll, mdc802x.dll, mdc8021x.vxd, mfc42.dll, mgr8021x.cnt, and so on. After skipping all those files I look at the Network Configuration window and see Belkin Wireless G Notebook Card and IEEE 802.1X Protocol. I still can't add Service or Client. > > boot to safe mode and remove ALL references to network cards..reboot > normally and let windows reinstall. > > let us know if your functionality returns. > > hth > |

I found a file called mdc8021x.inf that referred to the aegis files in the
\windows\inf\other folder. I renamed this and removed and reinstalled the SMC adapter. Now when I select Protocol in the Select Network Component Type window and click Add, nothing happens, as is still the case with Client and Service. > > I click OK and then see an Insert Disk dialogue asking for 'AEGIS Client > Setup'. > > I don't have one of those, so it can't find files such as libeay32.dll, > mdc802x.dll, mdc8021x.vxd, mfc42.dll, mgr8021x.cnt, and so on. > > After skipping all those files I look at the Network Configuration window > and see Belkin Wireless G Notebook Card and IEEE 802.1X Protocol. > > I still can't add Service or Client. > >> >> boot to safe mode and remove ALL references to network cards..reboot >> normally and let windows reinstall. >> >> let us know if your functionality returns. >> >> hth >> > > |

I ran Windows Setup and it fixed everything.
