I have found that my DG834GT router often does not reconnect
properly (ie internet connection is poor or non existant after apparantly logging on OK) after an idle timeout, with 1.01.00 and 1.01.28 firmware. I see the problem when connecting to my ISP, and also to the http://www.bt.net/digitaldemo test login BT provide, implying it is a router problem. I have been exchanging info with the netgear people, who seem unable to reproduce the problem (although I am not convined they have tried, they just seem to try and get me to do things in a different way to see if it fixes the problem, and no matter what I do, the problem remains) Is there anyone willing to test their router, and set the idle timeout to 1 minute, let it disconnect a few times and see if the router then reconnects OK when you, for example, try refreshing a web page? If they also get the problem, then its a Netgear problem. If people don't then there is something odd with my network connection or my router is faulty. I have posted some of my test results at http://www.thedyers.org.uk/NetgearTest1.pdf Nigel D. http://www.thedyers.org.uk/mail Nigel D |

However, if they sell a product that claims it has an idle timout facility, then its should work, and if it does not, then they should fix it. From my experience writing telecoms software, a fault that you find during testing is often a symptom of other problems that you have not spotted yet, and I would prefer it if something that was performing a critical function such as being my firewall worked properly. If things are not being reset properly, who knows what ports it might be leaving open in other circumstances??? Also, I have a suspicion that it does not recover properly in some circumstances if there is a break in transmission from the exchange end, and setting the timeout to zero, or whatever, will not fix that. But it may just be a problem with my setup (although I beleive my testing shows that it is not, but I may be wrong). hence my request to see if anyone else is willing to do a simple test.
