Hello all, I'm running a D-Link DI-524 router on my Win98SE computer connected via a D-Link DWL-G120 wireless adapter to my Win XP home computer. It all works well with only a few glitches when I first hooked it up, but I have resolved most of the issues. I have read various articles stating that a router puts up a firewall and I don't need separate firewall programs installed on both computers. A friend of mine got his home computer hacked into and he has a laptop with wifi, but I don't know if he was using any kind of firewall program. We both are connected to the internet via separate cable isp's. I'm wondering if I should install firewall software programs on both my computers to ensure I don't get hacked, or whether the router is good enough to keep them out. I tested my computers on the "Shields Up" web page and they tested good with the exception of "ping", which went through on both computers. Does anyone know where I can go to get information on routers and firewalls, or whether a firewall program is actually needed with a router? Thanks dc --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Version: 6.0.732 / Virus Database: 486 - Release Date: 7/29/2004 |

Yes, a router IS a firewall. >A friend of mine got his home computer hacked into and he has a > laptop with wifi, but I don't know if he was using any kind of firewall > program. Most folks use no encription and are EASY targets for hackers. ALWAYS use 128 bit encription. >We both are connected to the internet via separate cable isp's. > I'm wondering if I should install firewall software programs on both my > computers to ensure I don't get hacked, or whether the router is good enough > to keep them out. The router is just fine. >I tested my computers on the "Shields Up" web page and > they tested good with the exception of "ping", which went through on both > computers. www.Grc.com is where we test all our client's firewalls and connections. Just ensure your ports are closed. >Does anyone know where I can go to get information on routers > and firewalls, or whether a firewall program is actually needed with a > router? I usually google for various phrases to get information. Try this http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...=Google+Search (¯`·._.· £ãrrÿ ·._.·´¯) |

Thanks Larry, your information calmed some of my fears about being hacked. I checked my system again with 2 different web sites, and the results were good. A secure system.
