Hello all,
I'm running a D-Link DI-524 router on my Win98SE computer connected via a
D-Link DWL-G120 wireless adapter to my Win XP home computer. It all works
well with only a few glitches when I first hooked it up, but I have resolved
most of the issues. I have read various articles stating that a router puts
up a firewall and I don't need separate firewall programs installed on both
computers. A friend of mine got his home computer hacked into and he has a
laptop with wifi, but I don't know if he was using any kind of firewall
program. We both are connected to the internet via separate cable isp's.
I'm wondering if I should install firewall software programs on both my
computers to ensure I don't get hacked, or whether the router is good enough
to keep them out. I tested my computers on the "Shields Up" web page and
they tested good with the exception of "ping", which went through on both
computers. Does anyone know where I can go to get information on routers
and firewalls, or whether a firewall program is actually needed with a
router? Thanks

dc

Yes, a router IS a firewall.

Most folks use no encription and are EASY targets for hackers. ALWAYS use
128 bit encription.

The router is just fine.

www.Grc.com is where we test all our client's firewalls and connections.
Just ensure your ports are closed.

I usually google for various phrases to get information. Try this

Thanks Larry, your information calmed some of my fears about being hacked.
I checked my system again with 2 different web sites, and the results were
good. A secure system.

That's great. Now just be sure to keep your A/V and SpyBot up to date.
