Hi everybody,
I am new to Linux to be patient with me. I have install MEPIS with KDE. I need to connect to my Netgear DG834G router, but since my laptop doesn't have a ethernet card I bought a USB-to-LAN (ADM8511 Pegasus II Ethernet) to do the job. If I set the eth0 for dhcp I cannot even start it, so I have set it with a static IP address. The Netmas and Gateway are the same as the one set-up on my desktop (with Windows XP) which work just fine. The router cannot see the laptop (it shows only one device attached, i.e. my desktop). I don't know not even where to start looking, so if you need any other info just let me know and I'll try and dig it out for you. Thanks Giulio Giulio Troccoli |

If the manufacturer does not supply a Linux driver one or there isn't a free one available, then you just wasted your money. Googling for "ADM8511 Pegasus II Ethernet Linux" turns up plenty of web pages on setting up the device for Linux. Alternatively, buy an old $10 PCMCIA ethernet card, and it should all work once you plug it in. Personally, I would use a $20 PCMCIA WiFi adapter for the laptop and then use a $50 wireless router with say a 4 port switch to connect to the net. And then you have freedom to move the laptop around the house, whilst also connecting to the desktop PC. |
