Hello all,
For the W-ISP I work for, I have decieded that for security and control we will be using either PPPoE or PPTP to give our customers access to the internet. I have a miniature prototype setup and I like the results. Currently using roaring penguin's pppoe-server with freeradius I have dynamic IP's, one simulatenous session, and accounting running flawlessly. The computer that will run the pppoe-server or pptpd is a P4 3.0GHZ with one gig of RAM. I plan to have three hundred PPP sessions (maximum) connecting into this machine (is this plausable or am I dreaming?) and pppd takes care of contacting the RADIUS server (another machine). I like this because as soon as this system is full, we just add another. But I want to make sure things are reliable and rock-solid. The pppoe-server runs nicely but I know it is not meant for a production environment. If I do use it, what would some of the reprocutions be? Would performance be better if I were to use PopTop with no encryption? Is there an alternative to pppoe-server? I would like to use PPPoE since it is widely supported and all broadband routers support it (I know a lot of broadband routers support PPTP, but there are probably some that don't). Thanks in advance, Kevin Brown. Kevin Brown |
