Default Can't get my ethernet connection to work

So, I am back to using Windows again (Windows XP). I like Linux a whole lot
better, but I get no internet connection with it. I have read everything I
could find and they gave no answers at all. So, how do I get this thing to
work??? I'm about to get a laptop to install linux on so I can look at
modules.conf and try and figure out a way to make it work.
