I've set up a Linksys wireless network set up between my
Dell W98 desktop and IBM ThinkPad Windows XP Pro. I can see and access my desktop files on my laptop. I can see my laptop on my desktop, but when I click on it, I get an ENTER NETWORK PASSWORD window that says: Resourse: \\(my laptop name)\IPC$ Then it asks for a password, but any password I try, it says PASSWORD IS INCORRECT. TRY AGAIN. Help? Thanks. Peggy Peggy |

Steve,
I am experiencing the same problem that Peggy described. My network is basically the same. I have a linksys router with wireline connections to it from a Win98 PC and a WinXP PC. I thought that I had set up sharing correctly. I can see the share from the Win98 machine but when I try to open the share, I get the IPC password dialog box. What is different than Peggy's case is that I have already set up username and password to be identical on the two machines and yet I still get the IPC dialog box. I've noticed that several of your responses have suggested turning off the XP automatic firewall. I have not done this. Is this the problem? If not, do you have other suggestions? Thanks, Jim >-----Original Message----- >In article <6d3b01c35873$affe7c80 $(E-Mail Removed)>, "Peggy" ><(E-Mail Removed)> wrote: >>I've set up a Linksys wireless network set up between my >>Dell W98 desktop and IBM ThinkPad Windows XP Pro. >> >>I can see and access my desktop files on my laptop. >> >>I can see my laptop on my desktop, but when I click on it, >>I get an ENTER NETWORK PASSWORD window that says: >>Resourse: \\(my laptop name)\IPC$ >> >>Then it asks for a password, but any password I try, it >>says PASSWORD IS INCORRECT. I just checked and the XP firewall *is* disabled.
Apparently, that is not the problem. Any other ideas? Thanks, Jim >-----Original Message----- >Steve, > >I am experiencing the same problem that Peggy described. >My network is basically the same. You wouldn't even get an IPC$ prompt on Win98 if XP's firewall blocked access. In any event, make sure that it's disabled, as shown here: Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...c_firewall.htm Run the Network Setup Wizard on XP to fully enable file sharing. Don't run it on Win98, even if the Wizard tells you to: XP ICS - Starting the Network Setup Wizard http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...rksetupwiz.htm -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. Steve,
Thanks for the surprisingly fast reply. As I understand your instructions, you suggested running the Network Setup Wizard only on the XP machine. I've done that. During that process I chose a different computer name for the XP machine (for consistency with the Win98 machine). When wizard completed and I rebooted both machines, both names for the XP machine appeared when I opened the Network Neighborhood on the Win98 machine. When I tried to open the old name, I received a dialog box that said that that computer was not accessible. When I tried to open the new name, I got the same IPC dialog box. I've quadruple checked that the account name and passwords are identical. Did I follow your suggestion correctly or was I supposed to do something to the Win98 machine? Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks, Jim >-----Original Message----- >In article <074b01c3644c$dd11f6e0$(E-Mail Removed)>, "Jim" ><(E-Mail Removed)> wrote: >>Steve, >> >>I am experiencing the same problem that Peggy described. >>My network is basically the same. Steve,
I have poked around a bit and learned that I can successfully access files on the Win98 machine from the XP machine. I'm still stuck trying to figure out how to solve the IPC dialog box problem when trying to access the XP machine from the Win98 machine. I hope that you or someone else monitoring this thread can help. Thanks again, Jim >-----Original Message----- >In article <074b01c3644c$dd11f6e0$(E-Mail Removed)>, "Jim" ><(E-Mail Removed)> wrote: >>Steve, >> >>I am experiencing the same problem that Peggy described. >>My network is basically the same.
