Default access points & usb network adapters, wireless

i'm not having fun getting my 802.11b usb network adapter working under
FC3 linux. The asus was recomended as a way of working around driver
problems. I've also come across a d-link access point. the links:

<http://www.asus.com/products/communication/wireless/wl-330/overview.htm>
<http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=226>

1.) all 802.11b access points can serve the function of 802.11b
network adapters?
2.) are there any advantages to a network adapter over an access
point?
3.) any shopping hints for this canadian? I was looking at some
refurbished models.

thanks,
