Hello all and thank you in advance for any assistance that
can be rendered. Figure I should post the upfront info right away about the PC and laptop as it will come in handy here in a second for anyone willing to help. The PC: Gateway Select - 1.0 GHz Athlon Processor, 383 MB RAM, and has Windows 98SE installed on it. The Laptop: Dell Inspiron - 2.4 GHz Mobile Intel Pentium, 1 GB RAM and has Windows XP Professional SP1 installed. For those that don't wish to read it all, quick synopsis: Protocol for Ethernet Adapter not showing up, File and printer sharing service not showing up and File and Print Sharing setting not staying check. Now off to the long post. I purchased a Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter for the PC, installed it and it shows up fine in as an adaptor in the Networking screen. However, after three days, countless How-To and Tutorials, and many a forum read, I believe I have found the root of my problem and hoping someone knows the answer. One: The protocols for the Ethernet Adapter are not showing up under the TCP/IP. All I have right now in the network components installed are: Client for Microsoft Networks Dial-Up Adapter Linksys LNE100TX(v5) Fast Ethernet Adapter TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter After reading all of the forums and troubleshooting it says that I should have a service of "File and printer sharing on Network," or something that is similar that I appear to be lacking. When I click on Add, pretty straightforward to do it (you would think), and it doesn't allow me to add anything for Client, Protocol or Service. I click the icon and then Add and nothing happens. However, then I click on Adapter it brings up the Linksys LAN card on there, even though it is already in the installed components. If anyone has a lead on that, would be great to hear. Two: When click on File and Printer Sharing..., it has the two options to chose of giving others access and allowing printer access. Now I am done this about 5 times now and when I click on the two of them to allow it and click OK, it goes back to Network and I restart. However, it fails to save the setting of the two checked boxes. I have been unable to find a solution for that problem as well. Thank you once again for reading this long post and for any help anyone can offer. Cheers, Matt Matt Zinkil |
