Default DNS: Where is Master?

How do I tell 'machine1' that the system DNS Master is 'machine0'?

Of course it may also be that the setup on 'machine0' is defective: "I
am only an Egg."

Are you referring to "machine1" as an authoritive Slave DNS server?
See section 5.6 of the DNS-HOWTO.

Are you asking about just an ordinary host trying to resolve names or
IP addresses, or as a non-authoritive DNS server? Here, it doesn't
matter. It can ask any nameserver it knows (meaning those listed in
/etc/resolv.conf for hosts, and the named.conf file for servers) and
it _should_ get the same answer. In fact, if the person administering
the authoritive name servers has made a change to data on the Master
DNS box, there is a delay while this information propagates from the
Master to any Slaves, as well as the caching delay where other servers
"remember" the data until the "time to live" has expired. That's also
mentioned in the HOWTO.

You specifically mention DNS, so what might be happening if you were
using NIS or NIS+ is a whole different but not relevant ball of wax.

Not sure how to interpret the last part, but the DNS master should know
who it's slaves are, because most administrators set it up to only
permit zone transfers to specific systems. See section 6.1 of the
DNS-HOWTO.

It was Option B! I did not restart 'named' on 'machine0' after changing
'named.conf'. I didn't know that I had to....

Next Up: Whipping the 'Slave' into Shape!
