Default Networking 98 printer problem

Networking Laptop(XP) to Desktop(98SE) with Epson Stylus 880 Printer via a
crossover connection.
Network working OK but still a problem with the 98SE connecting to the
network printer. Laptop connects OK to the printer
Using the add printer to network Desktop to the printer I reach the stage
when I am asked for the printer name and it gives a wrong name which I
correct.
I then get a message that another printer has already got this name. (It
should have as that is the printer I am trying to connect to)
So I have to modify the name
I then get a message" The printer could not be installed. Quit all
programmes and try again. If the problem persists contact the system
Administrator"
Something is preventing me from networking this desktop to the printer.
Any ideas?

Sorry I am getting a bit confused here. Is the printer connected to the
desktop or the laptop. Your first sentence implies it is connected to the
desktop but then you go on to say that the laptop can connect to the
printer?

If the printer is connected to the desktop then you can't add it as a
network printer as it is already connected. It will connect through the LPT
port or USB depending on what connection it has.

Thanks for your help
I tried to make it clear but obviously failed. The printer is connected to
the laptop.
Are you saying that I shouldn't be trying to make the printer shown on the
desktop a network printer.?
That may be my problem. I was trying to make it a network printer
So how should I install the desktop printer.?

Thank you for you help
You are right I made a mess of the information- I added the reference to the
printer as an afterthought
The printer is connected to the laptop as a network printer and I was trying
to make the printer associated to the desktop also a network printer
As you say that was wrong.
The printer is installed on the desktop and when I look at
properties/details it shows print to the following port \\Laptop\epson which
is correct
The driver is also correct for the printer but when I go to Capture Printer
Port the device is shown as LPT4 \\LAPTOP\EPSON and I can select the path as
\\LAPTOP\EPSON
Reconnect at logon is ticked
If I now try to print and selecting Utility I get a Communication Error
If I look at the network on the laptop I can see the printer listed but no
printer listed for the desktop
If I look at the network on the desktop there is no printer listed for the
Laptop or the desktop
Any ideas?

I found that I was looking for items that did not matter because instead of
checking the utility and finding a communication error I decided to try
printing and it worked!
Problem solved

That's good - glad you got it working. Sorry I didn't reply to your earlier
posts but I've been at work all day :-(
