Network problem 98SE PC to XP PC

I have found that I can transfer files from my laptop(XP) to my desktop(98)
Both PC appear on the laptop network
The desktop only shows the desktop on the desktop network.
The desktop can access the internet through the laptop via Internet Explorer
But accessing Outlook Express leads to a dialup window which has a padlock
and key shown.This dialup should not be necessary so I guess it is something
to do with security. The error report states that my password was rejected
"Invalid login/password pair"
My main problem is adding the laptop to the desktop network so that I can
transfer form the desktop to the laptop

I should have stated that my network uses a crossover cable connection

I got very good advice from this site (E-Mail Removed)
I required to uninstall Zone Alarm first. That was what was preventing me
from connecting

PC (98)
I get the message "There was an error writing to LPT1
Printer nor ready. Make sure printer is ready and on line
Any suggestions

the printer (use a share name less than 8 characters)

you may need to uninstall the "network" printer from the win98 box and
reinstall after you have loaded win98 drivers on the XP box.

and of course make sure your firewall is not interfering :>

The printer is attached to XP and the 98 drivers were already installed
Have cancelled my XP Firewall.
I decided to check the port settings and found that the port selected was
the USB 001 USB Virtual Printer Port
I changed this to LAN Managed port \\OEMCOMPUTER\EPSON but I got a message
"Printer setting could not be saved"
I obviously have to change the port to the LAN setting but how do I do this?

Furtherto my last message I have checked the Print to the following port on
98 and it was set to LPT1 and I
changed it to \\laptop\epson .
