It does. You said you could ping both ways. Windows insists on its own proprietary protocol to "see" other machines in "Network Neighborhood" (although it will do Netbios over TCP/IP if you check that box). But stuff like ftp and Internet access will work without it. > > Thanks, > > Bill > -- > Bill |

Also, I tried connecting to the Internet from the Win98 machine with both TCP/IP and NetBEUI installed and cannot. The Win2k machines on the network can connect to the Internet. Does all 3 machines have NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled? "Bill Todd" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:(E-Mail Removed)... > Thanks for responding. I am confused. The Win98 machine does. I do not know where to check that on the Win2k machine. I will try to find out. Thanks. Yes. Both machines have NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled. Any other suggestions? -- Bill |

It sounds like you have both TCP/IP and NetBEUI installed and working. I have both installed but only NetBEUI works which is why I cannot get an Internet connection. In my case, TCP/IP does not work even if I uninstall NetBEUI on both machines. I had this problem with a Win98 machine long ago and it took months to find a solution. Unfortunately I do not remember what the solution was. If you have any other suggestions please let me know. -- Bill |

Others here know way more about this than i do, specially on the w2k side. this could take otherwise unnecessary detail for me to try to help. you're connecting ea machine to a router / internet gateway? do machines see themselves in NN even if they don't connect? when ping works from ea side, does rite click on NN and "find computer" find other machine by name, and if it finds other, rite click>open (explore) on the name says what? there is more than i know to ask at this point, way easier to do hands on. :/ first i would setup ea machine with only msclient and tcp/ip added, and verify internet connect working on ea machine. if both working then add file/printer sharing on ea, and go back and set up / verify settings permissions etc for getting machines to connect . likely be rite back here, but ?? -dj "Bill Todd" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:(E-Mail Removed)... > It sounds like you have both TCP/IP and NetBEUI installed and working. > I have both installed but only NetBEUI works which is why I cannot get > an Internet connection. > > In my case, TCP/IP does not work even if I uninstall NetBEUI on both > machines. are you using user logon at startup? the problem you described happened to me when a user in my network hit cancel at logon and then the user was not able to connect and see network servers. it is a win95/win98 network and using only TCP/IP. the user had to give a password and hit ok to access the network. but you can define a user with a blank password so the next time you start again no user and password is asked to logon and you can see network machines. but first you have to enter to Control panel | network and select Windows logon maybe it can help you.
