Default Problem with VNC

Hi all,

I'm trying to run a VNC server on a Linux computer (Pentium II) with
Mandrake 9.1 and KDE 3.1. The server seems to start running and I've
managed to get an xterm session in the vncviewer. However, if I try to
run KDE, I only get to see the wallpaper. It also seems to be trying
to load the panel, but no windows or anything get loaded.

I have even tried to run the viewer on the same PC as the server, but
I get the same results.

I am using the same VNC version, the same scripts and the same
configuration I have on another computer where the server works fine
(the only differences are that it runs Mandrake 9.0 with KDE 3.0, I
think, and its a Pentium IV).

Are there any minimum hardware requirements for the computer running
the server, any libraries or anything that need to be intalled or any
known issues with KDE 3.1 that prevent me from seeing the KDE session?

Thanks for your help
Mikel

If KDE works on the console. Then it should work with vnc. The command
you want to use is startkde(once that command is run it should give
error messages if unable to load, may help to solve prob) in the xterm
if no window manger is running. If the default ugly twm window manger
is running, then there is a startup scipt for vnc that can be edited
that will make kde the default window manager.

Also check your log file /home/mike/.vnc/yourhost1.log for any error
massages.

Well, first of all, thanks for your answer, Danny.
I think I've already done everything you say in your post, and still
can't get it to work. I just keep getting the wallpaper (which, I
think, indicates that KDE is trying to load) and the cursor.
Anyway, I've got another window manager working (don't know if it's
twm or any other, but it's enough for now), so I'll stay with that
one.
Thanks again.
Mikel

I think by default you get twm desktop. you can try using other desktop like
: fvwm, fvwm2, and see whether that gives you better results.

Thanks
