Default Can't set up a VPN

I have three computers set up on a peer to peer (Win 98).
I want to set up a VPN to connect across the Internet. I
followed the instructions by creating another Dial Up
networking connection for the peer to peer, but when I try
to connect I get Error: 751 The remote computer refused
the VPN connection. Any help would be appreciated.

Windows 98 cannot host a VPN connection. You need a server on the answering
end of the call for this to work.

According to the instructions I first have to connect to
my ISP, which is what I did and while connected I received
that error message. I assume this was the right way to
accomplish this.

That advice is correct as far as it went. Yes, you need to connect to your
ISP before you can establish a VPN connection. But Windows 98 does not
provide the host components for a VPN connection - just the client
components. So it can MAKE a request for a VPN connection but it cannot
ANSWER one.

Richard:

I am trying to accomplish connecting to my work computer
from home, over the Internet. At home I have a cable modem
set up and at the office I have dial up, which obviously I
will have to leave connected when I go home. I thought
that I would be able get at my files at the work computer
through my Internet connection. If so, can you recommend
something. Thanks for all your patience.

Steve

Your work computer still needs to be a server for VPN to work. :-)

I suggest you look into Dial-Up Networking instead. You'll find details in
the Windows Help system. Configure your work PC as the server and dial into
it from home.
