Linux vs. Windows connect speeds?

I am a Linux newbie so please excuse me if this question is dumb. I
recently set up my computer to dual boot SuSe Linux and Windows 98. When I
connect to the internet with my DSL through Windows 98 and check the
bandwidth at Cnet, it has averaged 695k-775k since I first got DSL. When I
boot Linux and connect I am getting 1100k-1300k connection speeds! How is
that possible? Does Linux really handle networking that much better or do I
not have my Windows networking setup correctly? Thanks in advance for any

The default rwin value for Windows 98 is hosed.
Go to www.dslreports for information on how to change it.

Windows98 needs to be tweaked. Basically, you need to change the size of
some buffers. There is a "Speed Guide" for windows.

Linux has these buffers already at a good enough size. It *is* a network
aware OS after all!
