Hi Steve,

I have lost the thread of one of the messages I was
trying to follow but will respond here. I did as another
user specified and manually set the IP address of the
Windows98 machine and printer and file sharing started
working. As far as I know, the IP address of the Windows
XP machine is retrieved automatically. I agree with you
that this seems to be an awkward patch, but I will make
use of it until I can get the real answer.

Linksys stopped helping me when they learned that I could
ping each machine from the other -- they became convinced
that it wasn't a router or PCI card problem and I agreed.

I appreciate the help with installing drivers without the
Windows 98 CD.
