Laptop nic or dongle not working

Is there a way to tell if the dongle and/or nic on a laptop is okay? I have
a P2P network and lost connectivity to my laptop when I moved it from my lap
onto my desk. Troubleshooting points to it being a problem with the
laptop.. not the network... so I'm thinking the point where the dongle plugs
into the nic is the glitch. I'd like to avoid replacing both the dongle and
nic if only one is broke. Any suggestions?
