Default WIFI Windows 98SE

Recently I purchased a new computer w/XP so that I could
give my older computer w/98SE to my son. In an attempt
to share internet capabilities I purchased a D-Link DI-
624 Airplus Xtreme G 2.46GHz Wireless Router so that my
son would have internet access. For the older computer I
installed a D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G120 802.11g (2.4GHz)
Wireless USB adapter.

I get a good signal from the router the problem is that
the older computer will not "talk" to the router (when I
try to ping the router IP address it times out)so it will
not connect to the internet. I've tried everything I can
think of including contacting D-Link tech support with
zero success.

Anyone have any clue what's going on and/or could give me
some suggestions to resolve short of giving up. Thx.

Paul

Hey Paul,

You contacted D-Link and still have no joy? That's kind of disturbing.
Ah well,I know nothing about D-Link, I've only used Linksys, so let's
move on.

What does the '98 machine give you when you execute "ipconfig /all" at a
DOS prompt?

If the machine is set to dynamic IP (assigned automatically from DHCP
server) is the router set to serve addresses (DHCP enabled)?

If the machine has an IP and subnet address, is it on the same subnet as
the router?

Are there firewalls or address filtering involved? If so, bring down
the firewall and cancel the filtering and see what happens with ipconfig
and pinging the router.

Is the router's address in the TCP/IP properties Gateway address?

And just for the record, you did install any utilities or extras that
came with the adaptor, right?

Let us know.

CHECK THAT! I meant to say "winipcfg" rather than "ipconfig /all". :-)
