I have 2 WIn98 machines networked with a NIC and small hub. We used
to access teh internet with ordinary dial up modems. However we have recently installed broadband from BT on one PC and I am trying to get ICS to work so we can connect the other PC. Broadband works fine on the 'Host' machine and the 2 machimes can PING each other and share drives so I think the internal network is OK. When I install ICS the wizard doesnt give me a chance to specify the network adapters to use for the internet connection. It just sets them up. Also looking at the ICSSetup.log my BT Voyager ADSL modem is always "NOT a candidate". After ICS has been set up , internet connectiosn dont work from the host. Turning SHARING off in Internet Properties and rebooting gets it working again. Have checked Network properties but just cant understand it. Anyone got any bright ideas? RC. RussC |

The brightest idea would be to put the modem back in its box and connect an adsl router to the hub to service both machines with an Internet connection without one machine having to depend on the other. It will also be far more stable than a pppoa dialup connection using win98 and will give your network added security since none of the machines are connected to the Internet directly. You can get a new one on ebay for about £30 like this one http://tinyurl.com/3acux If you can't spare £30 the next best thing is to do the configuration manually after you have installed ics. ie. Forget about any wizards. They're crap. Whatever your chosen ip address was before, installing ICS will change it to 192.168.0.1 with a netmask 255.255.255.0 Change the client tcp/ip settings as follows :- IP Address: Obtain an IP address from a DHCP server Default Gateway: remove all gateways DNS Configuration: Disable DNS Reboot and it should work. If it doesn't, look at the server setup. Check the ip address is 192.168.0.1 mask 255.255.255.0 and check the registry to ensure these settings. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\ICSharing\Settings\General EnableDHCP=1 IntranetInfo=192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 Jim. |
