I'm sure I've just overlooked something really daft, but the problem I've been having is that an XP and a 98 machine directly connected to each other can't connect. I know the cable works, and I know that the cards work as all of this has been tested. I also know that the config of the cards is correct because each card has had my broadband connection linked into it as a test which worked
When directly linked to each other, the 2 network cards don't even show the link light on the network cards. I've been tearing my hair out. Anyone got any ideas?? =?Utf-8?B?SmFtZXM=?= |

Please chk if you have the following setup:
I assume both pc connects to a hub. If not, you need a cross-link cable. winXp ------- Must enable NwLink NetBios protocol and NwLink IPX/SPX/NetBios Compatible Transport Protocol. I used setup network wizard with following config: a) the PC connects to a network or a hub and other computer also connect to the hub b)create a network setup disk !!! I actually run the network setup disk on win98 pc but it may not be necessary !!! win98 ------- Must add microsoft protocol for IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol After IPX/SPX is added, goto property must enable the option 'I want to enable NetBios over IPX/SPX' Between win98 and winXp -------------------------------- Remember to disable firewall(eg zone alarm !) !! Goodluck ! Use a CAT 5 crossover cable, not the straight through version.

I agree that connecting two computers directly to each other requires a crossover Ethernet cable. A regular Ethernet cable won't work, and neither computer will see a connection to the other one or show a link light. I disagree about adding IPX/SPX. Windows 98/XP can network with each other using only the default TCP/IP protocol. It's OK to install IPX/SPX, but it isn't necessary. If your network uses more than one protocol, choose one of them for file and printer sharing, and un-bind sharing from the other one(s). I've written a web page with details: Windows XP Network Protocols http://www.practicallynetworked.com/..._protocols.htm -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. I'm sorry, but I don't answer questions addressed directly to me in E-mail or news groups. I'm having the same problem and I *do* have a cross over cable. (the lights work and the cable is known to be good) |
