Since the computers can ping each other, the network connection between them is working. There's no need for a router or hub. Make sure that File and Printer Sharing is enabled on the laptop. Go to Control Panel | Network | TCP/IP->NIC | Properties | Bindings and make sure that there's a check mark in each box. Make sure that a firewall program isn't blocking access to the laptop. It can take quite a while for a computer to appear in Network Neighborhood or My Network Places after it starts up.
