I am trying to network my main computer and XP Pro Athelon 1700 to a Win 98
machine. I am using a Belkin 4 port router. I can't get the computers to see each other. However, I can get on the WEB from my 98 machine and I can check email from my main Athelon computer but I can get the browser to connected to any web sites from my Athelon computer. The Belkin setup site says its connected, which i know it has to be, since i can check my email. The WAN light on my router blinks, what does that mean? The port lights are on and on solid. I do have the properties checked so that the drives are shared. thanks for the help. Tom Tom C |

Tom,
Here's a bunch of stupid questions... forgive me: Have you installed File and Printer Sharing in the 98 PC? Do you have any shared folders in the 98 PC? Have you created a user on XP to match the username of 98? Can you ping each machines from the other? Are they on the same workgroup? What message do you get when you try to view the local network from each? I do have File and Printer Sharing installed and I also have Netbui
installed. I had to install Netbui on the XP machine with a small program and I have Netbui installed on the 98 machine. I have had these two computers networked with Netbui before so I know it can be done. I have the computers set up to be shared on each computer with full access. Everything is as it should be but when i go to set up a network place I can see the computer in the other computer in the network place but i get an error saying i don;t have permission. How do I ping on computer from another, sorry But i am new to this, but would like to know all I can. Tom,
In XP: Start>>Run>>cmd In 98: Start>>Programs>>MS-DOS prompt When the DOS window opens type ping computername (replace computername for the name of the other pc) I can't remember if you can use ping when they are networked using Netbui. Why not use TCP/IP instead? You can also type net view You say that they were networked in this fashion before; what happened or what changed since? I assume therefore that there is an account for the w98 username in the XP machine (only question you didn't directly answer) Do keep in mind that Netbui offers no security, so whatever shares you have when connected to the Internet are basically public domain... Don't know your router model, but a blinking WAN probably means activity, as opposed to the port light which mean connected or not connected, therefore solid.
