Hi all.....
I am having trouble connecting my laptop usinga WG511 wireless card to my network. I am also using a WGR614v4 wireless router and a DSL Modem. My Main PC is connected to the router via cat5 cable and everything works fine. When my laptop is connected to the router with cat5 cable it works fine as well. I am capable of sharing files and printers, and accessing the internet when using a wired connection. When installing the wireless card, the laptop obtains an IP address(192.168.0.x) using DHCP as it should. I can share files/printer, but not access the internet. However..... After shutting down the laptop, and restarting, it will no longer obtain an IP address from the router. and I show an IP address of 169.254.x.x and a subnet of 255.255.0.0(although the wireless utility shows a good connection between the card and router(green icon in taskbar) and shows the SSID etc....) From everything I have read this means the computer is not actually talking to the router and I possibly have a configuration issue. I have disabled Mcafee firewall. I have tried restarting the DSL modem then router then turning on computers. I checked the Netgear web site that I am using all the latest drivers and firmware. Below are all the specs and current settings. Specs: (Laptop-WG511 Card) Dell Insperion running Windows XP Home using WG511 Card with the following settings. Regional Domain:US Driver Version: 2.1.22.0 Firmware: 2.04.06.00 Smart wireless Util: 2.22.20.6 SSID: NETGEAR Security isableInfrastructure mode Channel 11 TCP/IP set to obtain IP and DNS automatically. (WGR614v4 Router) Channel 11 mode: g and b SSID: NETGEAR security: disabled wireless ap: on broadcast name: on Firmware: v5.0_02 DHCP nI have tried to be as specific as possible and definately appreciate any help you can provide Thank you in advance, Tim -- Life is like a dogsled team. If you've already done the following, I apologize. First, make sure
that the Windows XP wireless zero configuration utility is disabled. You can do this by typing SERVICES.MSC from the START then RUN dialog and scrolling down the menu to find the wireless zero config section. Once that is taken care of, go to the command prompt and tpe ipconfig /release then hit the enter key. Next type ipconfig /renew and hit the enter key. This action will release and renew your IP address. (an IP address of 169.254... does indicate and configuration problem). That should work. If not, unplug the router for approx 10 seconds before re-plugging it. The WGR614 router has a habit of overheating and causing a misconfig after going into standby mode or after being idle for a period of time. That is what I had to do when I was using the WGR614 as my AP before purchasing the Belkin F5D7230-4. Anyway, your problem SHOULD be solved. If not, let me know. Chat with you later. Check the log on the router. It should give a history of attempts to
connect to your ISP on the WAN side, and attempts by clients to connect on the LAN side. Doug,
Thanks for your quick reply. I had tried releasing and renewing the IP before. However I had not disabled wireless zero config utility. Unfortunately, I'm still having no luck, even after disabling it/releasing and renewing. It did release and renew an IP address of 192.168.0.4 until i rebooted the computer. I also tried what you suggested about powering the router off for 10-20 secs. I might also mention that once I reboot the computer I cannot the laptop to connect even with hard wired connection...The only way is to go back and do a system restore to before I installed the netgear driver/card. Like I said before, all seems fine (except internet connectivity) after a fresh install-until I reboot the machine. Then I am not able to connect to the router and obtain an IP address with either adapter(wireless or my built in nic). This leads me to believe that something is being installed or changed by the netgear driver/software within my TCP/IP or network settings somewhere, but it doesn't take effect until i restart. Thanks again, totally stumped, Tim |

From your wired desktop computer, go to your router's menu via your
browser and check a few things: 1. Check to see if DHCP is enabled. If not, enable it. 2. Check to see if you have MAC address filtering enabled. This is sometimes called a WIRELESS ACCESS LIST. If so, make sure your laptop's MAC address is listed. If you have MAC address enabled without listing the authorized MAC addresses, you will not be able to connect to the router. 3. If WEP is enabled, verify that the key is EXACTLY the same as listed in your card's config util. 4. Try changing channels on the router 5. DEFINITELY make sure that you have enabled WIRELESS ACCESS POINT. 6. Do you have a dynamic IP address and DNS address from your ISP? If so, make sure that you have those checked in the router. Hopefully, this will help your situation. In reference to not being able to connect to the internet via ethernet cable, try connecting your laptop directly to your cable/DSL modem. If you can get on the net that way, then we know it's definetly the router. If you cannot access the net in that manner then your problem might be with your ISP. Anyway, keep me abreast of your progress. Take care. On Wed, 16 Jun 2004 04:32:30 GMT, "Tim Reichert" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote: >Doug, >Thanks for your quick reply.
