If I understand you, you use a USB adapter to connect to the "portal". You
can't connect that USB into a wifi router. You'll have to go:

PORTAL -> DESKTOP PC --internet sharing--> Wifi router --wireless--> laptops

So you'll need an ethernet port in your PC that you plug the router into.
It then shares your connection wirelessly to the rest.

Good luck!

Default Adding Wireless to 1000c Home Portal

I have a 2wire 1000c portal (combo modem - router) for my earthlink dsl. A
remote desktop is on a USB phoneline adapter. The primary computer connects
by ethernet into the portal. My question is: can I add a wireless router
to handle a couple of laptops and still maintain the remote desktop via
phoneline adapter into the 1000c... . (the primary desktop, I guess, would
go into the wireless router & the router into the 1000c ethernet??) or will
that present some sort of conflict.. thanks
