i am trying to get win98 to pull an ip from a 172er DHCP
server (xdsl modem). the win98 pc is getting 169er IPs whereas the rest correctly get 10.x.x.x ips I tried all sorts of registry hacks and even deleted the DHCPInfo00 and reinstalled the network etc etc still it will not connect to the 172er DHCP server win98 in autoconfig always sets dhcp server to 255.255.255.255 and if i switch it off it's 0.0.0.0 and even if i set it manually ti what it is supposed to be and set a manual ip in the 10.x.x.x. range the win98 pc will not be able to connect to any network pc nor is it visible for others. notebook with xircom 10/100 pcmica card. slightly amused to read how the dhcp auto config is supposed to make it easier for the user to handle small LANs.. heh, only if all pcs are use win98 or what? also I noticed that when using xp and win2k in the same network the "default netbios" setting in xp does not work at all and does not switch to "eanble netbios over tcp/ip" if all else fails. the only way to properly populate the network when using mixed M$ Oses is to switch off that "default" feature in xp and set it to "use netbios" otherwise win2k PCs will not be known to the xp machine and traffic (email etc) will not be possible if the xp machine is set as gateway. I witnessed this behavior back when xp was introduced and assumed it has been reciftied by now, to my utter amazement it has not. if anyone has hints tips for the win98 issue i'd be grateful if nto i'll just dump the relevant data onto a ZIP disk and format the darn thing. a. greyhair |

Since the card won't work with a manual IP address, either, I don't think that the problem has anything to do with DHCP. It's possible that the network card or cabling is defective. Actually, XP and Win2K don't need to use NetBIOS to network with each other -- they can do it using SMB. However, NetBIOS is necessary if there are any Win NT or 9x clients on the network. XP's default NetBIOS setting is "Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server." I don't think that it's XP's fault if the DHCP server provides the wrong setting. However, that's such a common problem, especially with home broadband routers, that I recommend always specifying "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" in XP. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. Start from here -- if a machine using a DHCP client gets an address starting
with 169, then the machine cannot here the DHCP box. Primary step -- make sure the DHCP server has a big enough scope or block of addresses without too many reservations. And make sure that there isn't a router in between your clients and the DHCP server. There should not be more than 4 switches, hubs, repeaters, bridges between the client and the DHCP server. The DHCP server itself should be pingable from all points of the network 1st step is to get rid of all those hacks and get the registry back to normal -- delete and reinstall your client, nic, and protocol. By default it should be ready and listening for a DHCP server. Do not connect the network cable at this time. Since you're running win98, a xircom, and a laptop, make sure you have the most current drivers for the card and BIOS for the laptop. You may have an issue with the laptop not being able to run a type 3 or realbus card (you didn't specify the model of the laptop or the card, so I'm guessing) On installation, look for driver or resource conficts in Device Manager. Turn off Wake on LAN and other ACPI garbage. Run Winipcfg. COnfirm that you get a valid MAC address and that some sort of IP address is set. Chances are, it will be a 169 addrress. If you get anything else, you've got a problem. Ping 127.0.0.1 and see if you get a reply. If you do, good -- if not, you have a problem. Connect the network cable and note the connection link and data lights on both ends. Confirm on both ends that the connection type is 10Mbps/half duplex (you can adjust upwards later if everything goes right) Hit the release and refresh buttons in winipcfg. Check to see if you're getting the desired IP. If not, override the DHCP client by manually inputting your scope parameter is with an unused address. Attempt to ping again. BTW, that netbios stuff on 2k and xp -- designed totally for handling on a different type of network than what you are building. I wouldn't worry about it.
