Default Networking Win98 desktop to Win XP laptop

I am proposing to network my two PCs via a Network Path Cable CAT 5e RJ45
cable in order to share printers and data.
My desktop has Win 98SE and my laptop Win XP.
Does this give me a problem mixing the two systems?
Also could anyone give me a reference to a detailed article on connecting
only two home PCs
