Overall: I'm having trouble connecting to the internet on a Windows 98 computer through a router. Details: I currently have a Road Runner modem and a Netgear Router, which is connected to a Windows XP computer and a Windows 98 computer. The Windows XP computer is set up correctly, because it is connecting to the internet. However, the Windows 98 computer is not connecting to the internet, my guess being through a poor networking setup. One thing suggested to me was to look at the IP configuration, but when I type "winipcfg" in Run, it says "Fatal Error Cannot read IP configuration"; also, when I type "ipconfig" in Run, the window pops up for a brief second, then closes - however, I was able to make out that the window said "Cannot read IP configuation". Bottom Line: I need instructions on how to set up a Windows 98 computer for internet connection through a network. Thank you for your time in answering this issue. |

Hi Nathan: Each PC only needs one NIC, and Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) software is not needed. A category 5 straight-through (not crossover) cable should go from a NIC in each PC to one of the I/O ports of the router. The router LAN port should then connect to the cable modem, i.e., neither PC should connect to the cable modem. Is yours connected this way? Regards. To see the ipconfig output, first open a command prompt window using Start | Run | Command. Then enter the ipconfig command. Use the "exit" command to close the window.
