i have 2 win 98 machines (and another win xp machine)
connected to an SMC router/firewall which connects us all to an internet connection. we all have internet access just fine. i want to share my printer with the other computers and i've managed to turn on PRINT sharing (but not file sharing), i've given resource level access to the printer, and i've set my computer and one other to use window family logon to login, but these computers STILL cannot see each other. i have this funny feeling it's because of the router or the dynamic IP addressing. anybody have any suggestions? i've looked at www.careyholzman.com/netfixes.htm but nothing seems to apply to my case there. anybody have an idea? j adams |

If you reset your network using Step #1 at the web site you listed, I think
you'll find your problems behind you. I don't think that dynamic IP addressing is the problem, since all of the computers can access the Internet. Make sure that the router isn't configured to block file and printer sharing between the LAN computers. If you've installed a firewall program (Norton Internet Security, ZoneAlarm, etc) on any computer, un-install it while troubleshooting the network. Don't just disable it: un-install it. That's safe, because your router's firewall function protects your computers from Internet hackers. Note that some recent antivirus programs include firewall capabilities. See if each computer can ping itself and the other computers by IP address and by computer name. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see.
