Default PCI/PnP network

During bootup, a popup message keeps coming up...PCI
Ethernet Controller (New Hardware found...). I keep
going through the steps to install the AMD PCnet-Home
Based Adapter (this is the one found by my system). I
point to the directory where I had downloaded and
unzipped the adapter files from the AMD site, however,
during the installation it asks for some files missing
and to insert Win98 CD (which also does not have the
files). I gave up after trying several times.

So, I would like to know
1. How to install the driver (can someone point to the
site with the correct driver?)
2. What is the correct path where all the files are on
the CD?
3. If I cannot find/install the driver, how to get rid of
the popup message.
4. Pardon my ignorance, what all can I do with the
adapter (if that gets installed)? Is there a guide out
there (any sites)?

Thanks.

when you unzipped the drivers...were there subfolders?
eg. win95 ,winnt ,win98.... you may have to point the installer to the
proper folder (i've run into this with nic's alot)

Yes, there were three subfolder created (ndis3, ndis4,
and ndis5). So, the tree looked like:
1 PCnet_HOME
1.1 drivers
1.2 ndis
1.2.1 ndis3
1.2.2 ndis4
1.2.3 ndis5

During installation I pointed to these directories but
some files are not here, so it asks for Win98 CD, which
also did not have the files.

well for fun i downloaded the driver :>

it extracts to c:\pcnet_home

under that there is c:\pcnet_home\win9x\drivers

i think you downloaded the incorrect file...

my file = v21win9x.exe

Thanks! I have the same file. Sorry, the tree I
mentioned before had Win9x also. So, when I try to
install and give the path of c:\pcnet_home\win9x, it
copies some files, then looks for some more and asks for
the Win98 CD, where it does not find the files (again the
path...don't know where it has all the .dlls). I browsed
and specified different paths, but it did not help. I
pointed back to c:\pcnet_home\win9x...again no luck. If
I cancel the installation and reboot, it complains that I
am missing nwlink.vxd file.

That's why the card keeps installing, because you haven't completed the
installation. You will either need to get your hands on a Windows 98 CD, or
if you have the Windows Setup (CAB) files on your hard drive you can tell
the installer to look there for the 'missing' files. Until you complete the
installation it will keep running.

Default PCI/PnP network

First make certain you actually have the AMD net card.
Just because windows sees it as such doesn't mean it's
truly that specific card.
Take it out look at it and know for sure. It is not
possible for software to identify hardware. Windows will
guess if it can't find the PnP info properly. By the way,
windows rarely guesses well.
