Can an access point connect directly to a PC?

I have a wired network on the second floor and a cable modem with a wireless router on the ground floor. I want to link them together use a same brand device (a bridge) in order to guarantee the compatibility with my SMC router/AP. However, the SMC bridge will cost about $250, which is about 3 times of similar products (D-link DWL800+ is $70 on Buy.com). Since an external wireless ethernet adapter connects to the NIC of a computer, I am curious if it can be connected to a hub to make it as a bridge. An SMC external wireless ethernet adapter costs about $60.
I also wonder if APs and bridges made by different manufactures would work together. james |

Now I know the difference, thanks. Also thanks for finding the right product
for me.
