Set up:
New Telewest connection with Motorola cable modem. Works to a laptop PC via a cable, assigning a IP address in the 8n.nn.nn.nn. range. Connecting the modem to the Linksys Internet port and laptop to the "normal" hub port- no internet. Connecting the modem port and laptop to the "normal" hub ports internet. I think the problem is getting the addressess correct - in particular the Linksys as the gateway- I'm assuming it will then route to the Motorola and the user side needs no knowledge of the IP address on that side. In fact the Linksys will bridge the 8n....... addresses to the 192.... local addresses. Advice / opinions, please. Thanks Brian Brian Reay |

I've had at least three different devices with different MACs (two laptops and my router) hooked directly into the modem and different times with no problems at all. -- Gareth Halfacree http://gareth.halfacree.co.uk |

You need, at the very least, to reboot (or power off then on again) the modem before attaching it to the router's WAN (Internet) port. The modem remembers the first MAC address it sees a packet from, and will ignore any other until it is rebooted. Other restrictions on MAC addresses can be applied on the cable-side of the modem but, as Gareth Halfacree suggests, these may have been relaxed. (I know NTL did some time ago.) Alex |

I cloned the MAC when I replaced my router some while back but that was just as much habit as anything -- Alex Sig on old laptop - new one coming soon. www.drzoidberg.co.uk www.ebayfaq.co.uk |
