Default Setting up network help please

I have a Netgear Dg834g linked by cable to my PC. My PDA picks up a good
wireless connection no problem.
How do I now link up my old laptop wirelessly please? The laptop is an old
Toshiba and has a WiFi card/capability. The red wireless light flashes but I
cannot get it to connect or see with any router (there are several around
the neighbourhood).

Can you point me to a simple step by step guide please?
Thanks
Julie

normally "it just works" - do you have security enabled on the
wireless side of the Netgear (this can impair connection).

What settings do you have on the Tosh for SSID and channel - do they
match those used by the Netgear.

some clues about operating system and model may be helpful.

I've now managed to get it to work....not sure how I just kept playing with
the settings. The Desktop is XP Pro, the laptop is 98SE using an internal
mini LAN card....only "b" standard. The laptop is a Toshiba 4600 Satellite
Pro...only 128mb RAM, I have 2GB on my shiny new PC!

There is still one issue though....the Tosh gives a warning message saying
it cannot connect to AP. Also the range is not too good. I cannot use it in
the kitchen as the PC and router are 2 flights of stairs away and at
opposite ends of the flat. Several thick walls I suppose. So any suggestions
gratefully received.

Now to find a way of enabling my work laptop to use WiFi.......we are unable
to install anything and it is not wireless enabled!!

try tilting the antenna, rotating the AP, selecting channel 1

if it has ethernet get a "wireless bridge" that will give you an
ethernet socket from a wifi connection. Also sold as "game adaptors"
for connecting X-box etc.

directions.

If you are unable to install anything, then even using it on your home network
might fall foul of the requirements of your employer. Why bother when you now
have a number of working systems, if you might download something which *could
remain* on their laptop and lead to questions about how it got there... Peter
