Default ADSL internet sharing problem

hi all,

i have a major problem with internet sharing on my XP network.

firstly i will explain what i have, ADSL via a BT line connection to PC A
via the ethernet card. this ADSL modem/router has given that NIC card the IP
192.168.1.4.

i also have a Wireless USB LAN card which is connected to PC B upstairs. the
USB lan card has got ip 192.168.0.1 due to in part ICS. PC B upstairs has IP
set by DHCP so its in the 192.168.0.xxx scale at the moment 192.168.0.165.

both PCs can share files and see each other in MSHOME workgroup. i have
enabled ICS on the ADSL NIC to which is warned me it needed to change the IP
from 192.164.1.4 (which the modem has given to the NIC) to 192.168.0.1, it
obviuosly could not do this and instead it set the IP of the wireless card
to 192.168.0.1 and the network icon for the ADSL showed as "shared". great i
thought, i went upstairs and ran the network wizard on PC B and it still
failed to load up the internet.

i have got the internet gateway icon and can play in the settings but have
never had to do this in the past. strangely when i click internet explorer
it fails to open a page even after trying and actually looking like it
might. i ran cmd dos prompt and pinged www.yahoo.co.uk which works and
returns time of 35ms for each 4 attempts. so it seems there is something
blocking the actual web browsing/e-mail/etc but allowing it via pinging.

i have disabled all firewalls on both pc's, i have tried bridging both the
ADSL and wireless on PC A to no affect.

i can however make ICS work if i use Avirt soho 4.3, however the speed of
web browsing on PC B upstairs is 25kb/sec max whereas PC A has speeds of
230kb/sec down. now i could not find in soho if there was a limiter. and i
know the wireless network speeds are good as i can transfers files very
quickly.

however i would like to make windows ICS work for hope that the speed will
be full on both connections dependant on use.

i'm sorry this was a long explanation but i hope anyone can help me

Trevor Smith

IME Windows ICS is crap because it's difficult/impossible to
configure for some scenarios. I used to run a free version of
WinRoute but that's old and no longer available. A quick Google
suggests it might be worth investigating iNet Shaper - there's a free
version available and it seems to do what you need.

Hi. My comments are in-line with your message.

OK. What's the make and model number of the ADSL modem/router? Does
it have a wireless capability built in? How many LAN Ethernet ports
does it have?

If it's truly a router, you don't have to use ICS at all:

1. If it has a wireless capability built in, you can connect PC A to
the modem/router with a wire and connect PC B wirelessly.

2. If it doesn't have a wireless capability built in, you can use its
routing capability to give Internet access to both computers by
connecting it to a wireless router or wireless access point.

That looks OK. ICS always assigns 192.168.0.1 to the host computer's
home network (LAN) connection.

That's exactly what it should do. The warning told you that it would
change the home network (wireless card) IP address to 192.168.0.1. It
didn't tell you that it would change the IP address of the shared
connection (ADSL NIC).

Run the Wizard again on PC B. If it detects the shared Internet
connection, tell it to use that connection. Otherwise, tell it that
the computer connects to the Internet through another computer on the
network.

Run Internet Explorer on PC B. Click Tools | Internet Options |
Connections | LAN Settings and clear all of the boxes on that screen.

What firewall does PC A have? Some firewalls are incompatible with
ICS and must be un-installed, not just disabled.
