VPN Security

I am experimenting a wee bit with VPN.

I run a Draytek router which has an inbuilt VPN server, what I cannot
quite understand at the moment is the security issue.

I believe VPN makes a secure connection and is basically quite safe
but what is the main advantage or disadvantage of using PPTP or IPSEC.
