Default Explorer slow with network drive

I have just built a server, when using explorer to browse a drive it is
really really slow, folders take ages to open and list contents. I get white
screens etc etc...

However, when I browse the same drive on the same server using and "open"
dialog from within a program, everything runs along just fine.

What exactly is causing explorer to run like a snail?

I've experienced very sluggish share "exploration" before, but I don't know
about the "Open" dialog.

The sluggishness I've seen is associated with large CPU and network usage
spikes and seems to be caused by some combination of Windows updates (and
possibly other circumstances) on the machines concerned.

Worth checking - but if it is the problem the only advice I can give is to
make sure the machines are patched up to (the same) date.

Ensure that your network cards are implicitly set to 100Mbits (or
whatever) using their driver utility. Don't rely on "automatic" speed
negotiation.

Check cables and (if you've assembled cables and sockets yourself)
ensure you've followed the correct practice with the right wires in the
right connector pins.

if not that, then what operating systems are involved here?
