Default Problem pinging wireless PC on my network

Hi There,

I hope I'm in the right group for this.

I have recently addded my brothers PC to my wireless LAN, but I cant seem to
get his machine to answer ping requests. I need to go round there and check
the settings again, but before I do, which of the following settings are
likely to result in his computer not answering a ping request?

1. Wrong subnetmask
2. No default gateway set
3. His computer having the wrong Workgroup name

I am just trying a program called WiFi Defense, and that it telling me his
computer is connected to the LAN, but I can't ping it!

Thanks Aiden

Has he got a firewall installed? Can he ping you?

Not sure.. I won't be able to check further until tonight, but I just
thought I would ask the people in this group which is likely to affect this.
If anyone else would like to add, please do.. Thanks
Aiden

Usually most routers and firewalls are set to block ping requests as
its a method used to find if there's anything connected to a certain
IP.

This is usually only true of the router WAN port, but not common on the LAN
(Local Area Network). The OP is referring to a LAN connection not
responding to ping requests.

you might have the wrong IP

what message ICMP message ar you getting back when you try to ping?

timeout

destination host unreachable?

go over there check he has the correct IP setup

most people leave their workgroup name as MSHOME so that probably isnt the
problem, unless you have been changing them or unless you bro has a dodgey
one in

if it says he is connected then a probable cause could be that he has wrong
IP or subnet like you said

i had a problem where it was taken too long to acquire an address from DHCP
and it all went tits up and ended up giving the IP
168.253.somethinh.something or something similar to that

if your bro is in a different building then it might be best to employ
static IP addressing to his machine instead of DHCP

you should go over there and see if you spot any of this stuff, im sure you
know what your doing though, its probably something as simple as the IP
address
