HELP with port forwarding

Hi All,
I have a couple of computers running Windows XP(home), connected to a
D-Link DSL504 router. My son wants me to forward port 8000, so he can
use the Shoutcast audio streaming software. Can anyone please tell me
how to go about this and is their any security risk to my network in
doing so.Thanks

Can't help with how to set it up, except to suggest reading the manual,
trying it, and posting back if you can't get it to work. Before you try the
port forwarding, it would be worth checking you can access the stream from
the other PC (using the server machine's internal address).

It is a security risk, in that there is a chance that the Shoutcast server
has some remotely exploitable bug and someone might try to exploit it; by
forwarding the port you are exposing the server to the Internet. That
doesn't mean it's a *big* risk though, and in fact it isn't worth worrying
about IMHO.

you can do it as follows

using PAT (Port Address Translation)

using ICS its difficult so you will need to download some ICS
configuration tool - not sure if MS do one. I know under Windows 98 SE
you could

other way is to using RRAS (Routing and Remote Access Server) however
this requires Windows 2000 server.

or search the 'net for a port forwarding software..

as you mentioned the router, like my NetGear, this should allow you to
do port forwarding..

Port Forwarding is found under Configuration -> Port Redirection.

Once you get there it should be fairly obvious what goes where.

The security risks are those associated with running a IIS server on
your system.
