Cheapest - a couple of network cards and a crossover network cable, use
internet connection sharing (built in to XP) to handle the traffice. This
needs both pc's to be on and can be a pain to run reliably.

A better way (a bit more expensive) get a router (either wireless or
wired0 - this will allow both PC's to acces the net independantly of the
other one, more reliable in my opnion.
Many units are available these days with router, modem and wireless all
built in to one unit (if required), all depends how much wiring you want to
put in and what you want to spend.

www.adslguide.org.uk has some article on this - also check the newsgroup
uk.telecom.broadband this is a very common thread on there.

By far the easiest way is a four port ADSL Modem router such as:

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?
action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=59 004

although they start from as little as £30ish but make sure you get one
with an ADSL modem built in as some are advertised as broadband routers
but need an additional ADSL modem with 10/100 port.

You'll need a network card in each PC (£6-£10) and a patch lead in each
to connect to the router (£2-£5 each).

That way you eliminate the need to always have the host machine
directly connected to the ADSL on when you want to go on the internet
on the other computer.

If you're not on somebody's shit list, you're not doing anything
worthwhile.
