Network Bridge

On my newer PC's i see that there is a 'network bridge' under network
connnections. What does this do and do all of my network adapters
(1394, 10/100 and wireless) need to be bridged?

i'm pretty sure they were at one time i'd 'unbridged' them and it didnt
*seem* to have made a difference but i've been having all sorts of
problems lately.
