Default Should ADSL be 'Always On' ?

I have noticed recently that when I come to my computer after a while,
sometimes my ADSL modem/router has been disconnected from the ISP... I have
to go in and manually connect it to the internet again. Should my ADSL be
always on, or is this commonplace and normal (to get disconnected).

My parents' experience with ADSL is that very occasionally their ADSL
modem/router disconnects and needs to be manually reset.

Whether it disconnects after being idle for a while and then *normally*
reconnects automatically and invisibly, I'm not sure. I'll check the
router's up-time next time I'm home: if this is longer than the normal idle
time (eg overnight) then I'd say that it's not normal for ADSL to disconnect
when idle, and that it should be "always on".

Isn't there a 'keep connected' type setting in the modem / router Tom?

All the best ..
